IU Kokomo volley improves to 7-0

HOBART — Indiana University Kokomo’s volleyball team continued its undefeated start Saturday.

IUK played in the Purdue North Central Invitational and scored a pair of wins to improve to 7-0. The Cougars opened against the host Panthers and rallied for a five-set win, then beat Alvenro College in three.

In the first match, Purdue North Central won the first two games, 25-14 and 25-23. From there, IUK stormed back, winning 25-18 and 25-21 to force a decisive fifth set which the Cougars won 15-8.

Micayla Speidel led IUK’s attack with 23 kills. Kaley Harness had 14 kills and Megan Riley chipped in seven. Also for IUK, Keeana Walton had five block assists and Cortney Hanson had 48 assists.

Against Alvenro College, IUK cruised to a 25-19, 25-23, 25-12 victory. Speidel led the offense with nine kills and Harness added five. Kaleigh Ensley and Lael Burrus each had 11 digs on defense. Kaitlyn Emery had 23 assists.

Garcia takes lead of Deutsche Bank

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — A good start and a great finish was enough for Sergio Garcia to take the lead Saturday in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

After a great start Friday, Phil Mickelson cooled off with a 71.

On another day of soft conditions and plenty of birdies on the TPC Boston, Garcia opened with five birdies in seven holes, and then made an 18-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole for a 7-under 64 and a one-shot lead over Roberto Castro and Henrik Stenson, the Swede who is popping up on every leaderboard.

Garcia was at 13-under 129, and it held up as the lead when no one could catch him on a cloudy afternoon with some light rain. Stenson had a 63, and Castro shot 65.

Yani Tseng takes Safeway Classic lead

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Yani Tseng moved into position to end a long victory drought, shooting a 9-under 63 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Safeway Classic.
