IU Kokomo volleyball wraps up invite play

HOBART — IU Kokomo’s volleyball team split a pair of matches Sunday at the Purdue North Central Invitational, falling to Lawrence Tech, then beating Robert Morris. The Cougars finished 3-1 in the two-day gathering and improved to 8-1 overall.

Lawrence Tech beat IUK 27-25, 25-19, 25-19. Kaley Harness led IUK’s attack with eight kills and Micayla Speidel and Rachel Allen followed with seven kills apiece. Megan Riley offered five assisted blocks. Cortney Hanson had 22 assists and Lael Burrus had 12 digs.

The Cougars bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat Robert Morris 25-23, 25-20, 25-18. Spiedel had a team-high 13 kills and Harness had nine kills. Harness also had one solo block and four assisted blocks. Hanson had 34 assists and eight digs and Burrus had 15 digs.

Next up for IUK is a trip to St. Louis this weekend for matches against conference rivals Brescia University on Friday and St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Saturday.

S. Williams cruises into U.S. Open quarters

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams avenged her major loss to Sloane Stephens, pulling away from the young American for a 6-4, 6-1 win to return to the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Stephens beat a hobbling Williams in the quarters of the Australian Open in January.

“She’s definitely a good player, so it felt like something bigger, but I just had to stay focused for the moment,” Williams said in an on-court interview.

In the rematch Sunday, the 16-time Grand Slam champion served big and controlled points against the 20-year-old. From 4-4 in the first set, Williams won eight of the last nine games.

“The whole time I just tried to do what I wanted,” she said. “Stay calm, stay relaxed, stay composed.”

The 15th-seeded Stephens hung with the defending champ for most of the first set. After Williams broke to go up 4-2, she broke right back.
