New Castle fires volleyball coach
NEW CASTLE — New Castle athletic director Brandon Ecker confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Randy Gardner is no longer the varsity volleyball head coach, the Muncie Star Press reported.
Ecker declined to specify if Gardner resigned or was terminated by the school.
The Class 4A No. 3 Trojans (6-0) played their last two matches without Gardner, while he served a suspension. Ecker declined to comment on why Gardner was suspended for those matches.
“That’s just part of the entire process, as we’re going forward here. Any personnel matters we try to handle internally for peoples’ protection,” Ecker said.
Assistant Mike Dodrill served as the interim head coach for those matches against Cowan and Connersville, and Ecker said Dodrill has agreed to remain in that position while the school conducts a coaching search.
Usain Bolt to retire after Rio Olympics
BRUSSELS (AP) — Usain Bolt says he plans to retire from sprinting after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Bolt says he wants to win gold in Rio, set another world record in the 200 meters next year, and perhaps win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Bolt says “I think it will be a good time to retire, on top and just been dominating for so long.”
After winning another three golds at the world championships in Moscow, Bolt will run his final race this season in the 100 at Friday’s Van Damme Memorial.
Bolt says “if I want to be among the greats of [Muhammad] Ali and Pele and all these guys I have to continue dominating until I retire.”
