Bengals blank Taylor to remain undefeated

Peru finds paydirt on each of its first seven possessions.

PERU — The Peru Tigers celebrated homecoming in a big way by shutting out Taylor 47-0 in Mid-Indiana Conference action here at Bengal Memorial Stadium on Friday.

Peru (2-0 MIC) took advantage of a small Taylor squad by scoring on its first seven possessions, which included a punt return.

“Its amazing when you try to go back and think about two years ago when we first got here,” said third-year Peru coach Bob Prescott on his team’s 4-0 record. “We really try to focus on being as fundamentally sound as we can be. We knew Taylor would come out and play hard, and they did play hard. Coach [Eric] Davis was fundamentally sound, and he changed their scheme around. They were able to move the ball at times, but they just weren’t able to get it in the end zone.”

Peru celebrated its first shutout victory since Sept. 10, 2010, when the Tigers blanked the Titans 61-0.

Peru’s first possession ended with Steven McBride scoring his first touchdown on a 45-yard run. Kegan Kern scored on the Tigers next possession from 68 yards out. Gordo Maldonado added to Peru’s scoring punch with a 52-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Nolan Brimbury. Maldonado then scored on a 78-yard punt return. All in the first quarter. Peru led 27-0 at the break.

McBride scored his second TD in the second quarter on a 41-yard run, and Michael Richardson added to the scoring on a 15-yard touchdown run for a 40-0 halftime lead.

Kern closed out the scoring with an 18 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

While Peru was successful on its first seven possessions, Taylor couldn’t score on its 13 total possessions. In six of those possessions, Peru held Taylor to four plays or less.

“They were better than us in every facet of the game,” Davis said. “They had intensity, better execution. They were more physical. They have some really good athletes. That is the bottom line on [Friday’s] game.”
