Fire strikes Elkhart factory

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — Firefighters from more than 10 departments are fighting a large factory fire in northern Indiana.

Assistant Fire Chief Jo Johnston of the Osolo Township Fire Department said Sunday morning that most of the fire at the Lami Plast plant in Elkhart has been contained, but firefighters might remain there until Monday.

Johnston says that two firefighters suffered minor injuries when they were struck by a hose.

Johnston says firefighters went to the factory late Saturday because the metal roof collapsed under the weight of snow near a gas meter. Johnston says there was no sign of a fire then or problems with the gas, but they were called back about three hours later and found the building nearly engulfed in flames.

The fire produced thick black smoke visible for miles.
