HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — Northwestern Indiana authorities say an overnight house fire has killed an infant and two siblings in Hammond.
Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey says a 7-month-old boy, a 3-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy suffered fatal burns in Wednesday night's fire.
Hammond Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Margraf tells WMAQ-TV (http://bit.ly/K832hj ) the victims' 28-year-old father and two children, ages three and six, were taken to a Hammond hospital but were expected to be moved to a Chicago hospital's burn unit.
Margraf says the man was badly burned while the surviving children suffered smoke inhalation. He says the family's home was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived.
The home had space heaters, but the fire's cause remains under investigation with assistance from the state fire marshal.
