Site picked for SW Indiana fertilizer plant

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) — A company backed by a Pakistani group has picked as southwestern Indiana site for a planned $2.1 billion fertilizer plant.

Midwest Fertilizer Corp. is seeking zoning approval from Posey County officials for a 219-acre site that is now farmland in an industrial area just southwest of Mount Vernon.

The project has faced controversy since Gov. Mike Pence in January withdrew the state's incentives offer for the plant because fertilizer made by Pakistan-based parent company Fatima Group was used in bombs in Afghanistan that killed American troops.

Local officials have backed the project. Posey County Economic Development Partnership John Taylor tells the Evansville Courier & Press the site selection shows that the project is the real deal.

Company executive Mike Chorlton says construction is expected to start next spring.
