Indianapolis — A Statehouse rally Thursday will feature a national teachers union president as well as local union officials.
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten is scheduled to talk about Indiana education issues that unions oppose, including the restriction of teacher collective bargaining and vouchers that direct taxpayer money to private schools. Union leaders say Weingarten has been advocating for teachers in other states too, including Ohio and Wisconsin.
The rally is planned outside the Statehouse at 5:45 p.m. Union members have been gathering at the Statehouse for more than a week to protest proposals backed by Republicans who control the Legislature.
