Lightning blamed for central Indiana house fires

---- — WESTFIELD (AP) — Lightning is being blamed for causing a fire that destroyed a family's home in suburban Indianapolis as a line of thunderstorms crossed the area, also causing downed trees and power outages.

Westfield Fire Department spokesman say family members head the loud bang Sunday and a neighbor soon banged on the front door to tell them about the fire. Crews arrived to find flames shooting through the roof but no injuries were reported.

A lightning fire destroyed a home on the Indianapolis northeast side, while an Indianapolis Zoo spokesman says a security guard was indirectly struck by lightning but was conscious with no visible burns at a hospital.

Utilities reported nearly 15,000 power outages Sunday evening. The worst outages remaining Monday morning were about 900 in Morgan County, southwest of Indianapolis.
