Inmate commandeers truck, escapes from jail

Associated Press

SOUTH BEND (AP) — Northern Indiana police are searching for a Mohawk-wearing inmate who escaped from a jail by commandeering a bread delivery truck and smashing it through a gate.

WSBT-TV reports that 27-year-old Franklin Rice of South Bend escaped early Tuesday from the St. Joseph County Jail, prompting officials to lock down the South Bend jail and restrict traffic on nearby roads.

Authorities say Rice was assigned to kitchen duty at the jail. He allegedly gained access to a bread delivery truck about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday and drove it through a closed gate on the jail's north side.

WSBT-TV reports Rice has his hair shaved into a Mohawk. Before his escape he was being held at the South Bend jail on burglary charges.
