Woman, 2 children found dead in S. Indiana creek

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) — The bodies of a woman and two children were found Wednesday in a shallow southern Indiana creek, and police said investigators are treating the deaths as homicides despite the lack of any obvious signs of foul play.

A person walking through Binford Park spotted the bodies in Falling Run Creek about 5:15 p.m., New Albany police Maj. Keith Whitlow said. The creek is 12 to 18 inches deep.

"There's no obvious signs of foul play," Whitlow told The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky. New Albany is across the Ohio River from Louisville.

One of the children appeared to be around 2 years old and the other was an adolescent, but their genders were not immediately clear, Whitlow told the News and Tribune of Jeffersonville. The names of the victims were not immediately released.

Investigators were treating the deaths as homicides, Whitlow said, but he did not release a cause of death.

Whitlow also did not have an estimate of how long the bodies had been in the creek. More information will be released following autopsies, he said.

Several police officers were on the scene shortly after the bodies were discovered and the entrance to the park was taped off.

WHAS-TV reported no vehicles were found near the bodies.

Whitlow said it's been nine years since a body was found in Binford Park, located in the center of New Albany.

"We haven't had many ones like this, especially with children," Whitlow told the News and Tribune.
