Deputy rescues couple from smoke-filled Bloomington home

BLOOMINGTON (AP) — Authorities say a southern Indiana sheriff's deputy rescued an elderly couple from their smoke-filled home by kicking in its front door and awakening them.

The Herald-Times reports Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Allen Mullis saw smoke billowing from the couple's garage and house about 3 a.m. Thursday as he patrolled their neighborhood.

He kicked in the home's front door and led 80-year-old Edward Arnold and 83-year-old Mary Arnold to his patrol car for safety.

Perry-Clear Creek fire Chief Joey McWhorter Jr. says it's lucky the deputy happened by the home when he did because the sleeping couple hadn't realized there was a fire in their garage.

Firefighters determined that either the cord to an electric leaf blower or a faulty wiring connection inside the leaf blower sparked the fire.
