Lafayette — Many of the nearly 1,000 students displaced from two schools near Lafayette by severe storm damage in November are expected to be out of temporary locations for the next school year.
Tippecanoe School Corp. officials are planning to return Mintonye Elementary School classes to that repaired building in the fall, but the neighboring Southwestern Middle School won't be ready.
Mintonye's students and sixth-graders from Southwestern have been at a former school owned by a church.
Superintendent Scott Hanback tells the Journal & Courier and WLFI-TV that plans are to move the sixth-graders to another elementary school that's being expanded in order to save those lease payments.
Hanback says rebuilding work is expected to begin soon on Southwestern Middle School, which had part of its roof torn off in the storm.
