Indiana lawmakers proposing new day care rules

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — At least three Indiana lawmakers say they'll sponsor bills in their upcoming session to strengthen health and safety standards for all Indiana day care centers that receive federal tax dollars.

The Indianapolis Star reports at least two of the proposed bills aim to close loopholes that exempt church day cares and unlicensed day care centers from many of the safety regulations that apply to licensed facilities.

Efforts to strengthen church day care regulations have met with strong resistance from groups that want to prevent state intervention in church affairs. But child care advocates contend that any day care that takes government money should play by the same rules.

Republican state Sen. Travis Holdman of Markle says lawmakers need to discuss accountability for day cares that receive taxpayer dollars.
