Lafayette — A central Indiana sheriff says an ice jam along a creek that's caused floodwaters to swamp at least eight homes is about 1 mile long.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff Tracy Brown says the ice jam is along Wildcat Creek near the spot where that stream flows into the Wabash River.
He says the mile-long ice jam is filled with big and small slabs of ice as well as trees and tree limbs and has sent water coursing through a neighborhood a couple miles north of Lafayette.
WLFI-TV reports about 20 people had been evacuated. State conservation officers used an airboat to help some people reach dry ground. No injuries were reported.
Brown says the ice is so high it's just beneath a bottom of a bridge over Ind. 25.
