Logjam being removed from Lafayette-area bridge

LAFAYETTE (AP) — A crew has started working to clear a massive logjam caused by flooding last month that damaged a county bridge near Lafayette.

The workers used an excavator with a grapple on Monday to pull, twist and break logs that piled up in Wildcat Creek next to the bridge for Tippecanoe County Road 100 North.

Tri-Tech Construction Services supervisor Greg Albertson tells the Journal & Courier (http://on.jconline.com/108pCeL ) he couldn't guess how much debris is across the creek and that it might take a week to remove it.

County officials say pressure from the logjam broke a portion of a steel support under the bridge. Officials have kept the bridge open, but have put it near the top of the county's bridge replacement list.
