Snow removal backlash for mayor

PORTAGE (AP) — The mayor of a northwestern Indiana city is facing criticism for sending snowplows to adjacent Gary to help clear some of its roads following a 20-inch snowfall.

Portage Mayor James Snyder says he reached out to Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson on Wednesday to offer assistance following this week’s snowstorm.

Snyder tells The Times he sent four snowplows to Gary to help that city’s crews remove snow during an 8-hour period. Two of those plows were later called back to Portage when snow began falling there again.

City Councilman Mark Oprisko says he objects to the mayor’s decision because he didn’t consult the council before he sent the plows to Gary. He calls the mayor’s Gary snow-clearing decision “a waste of our taxpayers’ dollars.”
