ROCHESTER (AP) — A man was shot during a gunfight with police at the end of a nearly-four hour standoff at a home in a rural community in northern Indiana.
Indiana State Police say 46-year-old Nicholas S. Westerhoff was wounded late Wednesday night in an exchange of gunfire with officers who had surrounded his home in Rochester, about 55 miles northeast of Lafayette.
Police say Westerhoff refused to leave his home when officers arrived about 8:15 to investigate a domestic disturbance. At one point, officers heard gunfire inside. Police say Westerhoff began firing from the doorway and officers returned fire. Police say they don't know if he was injured by officers' shot are his wounds were self-inflicted.
Westerhoff was airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne in serious condition..
