Crash traps deputy for more than 1 hour

HELMER, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a northern Indiana reserve sheriff's deputy was trapped in the wreckage of his patrol car for more than an hour following a crash that left him seriously injured.

WPTA-TV reports 34-year-old Steuben County sheriff's reserve deputy Adam Meeks was on his way to help Dekalb County police when a car pulled out in front of him Saturday night.

Meeks swerved to avoid that car but he hit a tree, leaving him pinned inside for more than an hour before fire crews extricated him from the wreckage.

The Fremont man was airlifted to a local hospital with head, ankle, and wrist injuries and remained in serious condition Sunday.
