State police step up efforts as Thanksgiving nears

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana State Police are stepping up enforcement efforts in an attempt to make roads safer during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.

State police say the high-visibility enforcement efforts started Friday and will continue through Dec. 1 as part of a nationwide effort called the Safe Family Travel campaign. That campaign includes sobriety checkpoints, patrols targeting impaired drivers and looking for people not wearing seat belts.

State police say 150 fatalities last year were linked to alcohol-impaired driving in Indiana. Alcohol-impaired collisions were less than 3 percent of all crashes, but accounted for nearly a fifth of Indiana's 779 traffic fatalities in 2012.

State police say 250 other law enforcement agencies throughout Indiana also will be taking part in the campaign.
