PREP ROUNDUP: Wagner puts on show for Kats

Kokomo hurler fans all but two batters

By TRIBUNE SPORTS STAFF

It was the Elizabeth Wagner show as the Wildkat hurler struck out 14 and made a fielding assist for the 15th and final out in a 20-0, 5-inning win over host Muncie Central Monday afternoon. With outstanding pitching, fielding and hitting, Kokomo stayed near the top of the North Central Conference with a 3-1 record.

“Wagner was on fire,” Kokomo coach Lisa Tate said. “She had a very strong performance, and for a pitcher to have not only have the strikeouts, but no walks is a coach’s dream.”

Wagner’s only blemish came in the fourth inning when she gave up a single to the leadoff batter.

Brittany Camp led Kokomo (11-4) with two singles, a triple, double and five RBIs. Kate Toney added a two-run homer in the third that capped a 10-run inning. She also had two singles and three RBIs. As if the pitching gem wasn’t enough, Wagner contributed two doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Jenny Bailey had two singles and two RBIs.

“It was also a nice game for everyone to play,” Tate added. “The girls did what I ask them to do as far as hitting so we can get ready for down the road for the sectional.”

Logansport 5, Northwestern 0

Bri Kuffell’s single in the second inning was Northwestern’s only hit as the Tigers dropped to 8-9.

“They had a really strong pitcher, and she had a lot of heat,” Northwestern coach Kerrie Kucholick said.

Shelby Barnett was the losing pitcher.

Tri-Central 8, Tipton 5

Tri-Central trailed 4-0 before putting up eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting a win at home to improve to 4-11.

Jordan Shaffer got the Trojans’ offense rolling with an RBI-double to knock in the Trojans first run.

“After that we just kept putting the ball in play and we did a good job capitalizing on some of their mistakes,” TC coach Sean Swan said.

Tyler Burke had three base hits, Corban Fiscus was 2-of-4 with a double, and Chris Pavey had a two-run triple.

Blake Burnett earned the win, fanning eight in six innings. Trevor Davis picked up the save.

Tipton scored four runs in the top of the third inning. Justin Reese helped put the Blue Devils up with a two-run homer.

Tri-Central travels to Rossville today.

GOLF

No. 12 Peru 162, Tipton 166

The No-12-ranked Peru Tigers had to wait on their fifth player’s score to be totaled before coming up with the victory on Peru Municipal Golf Course’s front nine. Freshman Taylor Smith came through for the Tigers by shooting a two-over par 39 to help Peru get its seventh win in eight matches.

“We were waiting on the fifth man, and we were behind,” Peru coach Doug Muzzillo said. “Taylor came through for us. Just like last year down at Tipton — that was also decided by the fifth man, and Terry Smith, who was a freshman, came through for us.”

John McMillen was medalist for Peru with an even par 37. Other Peru scores were Ethan Eckelbarger (42), Derek Mullikin (44) and Terry Smith (44).

“We did get some good news [Monday] as McMillen was named player of the week state wide with his 69 at Honeywell last week,” Muzzillo added.

Tanner Gray led Tipton with a 38 followed by Ethan Harper (41), Marcus Tishner (42), Jake Henry (45) and Micah Voorhis (50).

Marion 168, Kokomo 169

Despite a solid effort from freshman Nick Cardwell, the host Wildkats came up one stroke short at the Kokomo Country Club.

Cardwell shot 40, followed by Nick Irish (42) and Brandon Gainer (43).

“Cardwell continues to play well for us,” Kokomo coach Tory Horner said. “Gainer has been consistent for us each time out, and his contributions are solid.”

Nick Barnes finished as medalist, tallying a 36 for the Giants.

Also for Kokomo (3-5), Billy Bersbach shot 44, Luke Pitcher 45, and Lee Barker 48.

Kokomo travels to LaPorte Friday.

Northwestern 157, Cass 171

Three players shared medalist honors on the par-36 Logansport Country Club Course, but the Purple Tigers edged out the win.

Northwestern’s Ben Marvin-Egel and Peyton Richardson, along with Cass’ Adam Truax, shot 36 to share top honors.

Ben Troxell followed, carding a 40 for Cass. Matt Miller shot 41, and Kyle Zimmerman and Blake Bowser each shot 51 for the Kings.

Drew Hanson shot 41 for Northwestern. C.J. Hanson and Carson Bowers added 44s.

“Keeping the ball in play is so important on days like these,” Northwestern coach Randy Lindgren said. “We only had two penalty strokes in our top five players, and when you do that you will usually do pretty well.”

Northwestern (5-2) plays in Saturday’s MIC tournament at Chippendale.

GIRLS TENNIS

Taylor 3, Rossville 2

For the first time in two years, Taylor came out on the winning side. But it wasn’t easy.

The Titans’ No. 1 doubles team of Karen and Kelly Arnold won in straight sets, but with tie-breakers (7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4). The No. 2 doubles team of Taylor Allen and Charlotte Harbaugh took the match in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 6-1). Only at No. 3 singles did Taylor pick up an easy point as Lori Edwards won 6-3, 6-1.

“Allison and Amy Lipchik at No. 1 and No. 2 singles played really well,” Taylor coach Dave Wise said. “Edwards got us our first point, and she came off the court pretty quickly. The No. 2 doubles team finished their match, and Karen and Kelly trailed in the second set, but they came back and won it. It was pretty exciting to get the win. I can’t remember the last time we won with two tie-breakers.”

Northfield 4, Northwestern 1

The Tigers were able to get just one point against the defending Peru Regional champions.

Sara Poppas and Amy Harshman claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, but the Tigers lost the four remaining points in straight sets.

“Northfield just played very well,” said NW coach Lori Miller. “Sara and Amy did a nice job. They are very competitive and it seems the more challenging the match, the better they play.”

Northwestern is 7-7 overall and still very much alive in the Mid-Indiana Conference title chase at 5-1. Eastern leads the MIC at 3-0, while Hamilton Heights and Cass have one loss. The Tigers close conference play Thursday, hosting Maconaquah.

NW had one JV winner in Emily Hoeksema.

Maconaquah 3, Western 2

Western fell one point short of getting its second Mid-Indiana Conference win. The loss drops the Panthers to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the MIC.

Ashleigh Wheeler won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and the No. 2 doubles team of Alexis Hadden and Amanda Hudson won by the same score.

“Wheeler has been consistent all year, and we had a good match out of our No. 2 doubles team,” Western coach Jerry Bradley said.

BASEBALL

Westfield 6, No. 10 Western 2

The Class 3A, No. 10-ranked Western Panthers (10-3) got an early 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but a walk, sacrifice bunt, triple and a home run by Westfield in the bottom of the third, gave the Shamrocks a 4-2 lead, which ended up being enough for the win.

Western coach Ty Calloway wasn’t very pleased with his team’s performance.

“We had the bases loaded a couple of times, and we didn’t hit the ball,” Calloway said. “We had a lot of missed opportunities.”

Kevin Jewell and Matt Reida led the Panthers with two hits. Jewell had, single, double and an RBI, and Reida had two singles. Connor Love cracked a triple.

Cass 11, Oak Hill 4

The Cass Kings (7-5) seemed to love Oak Hill’s ball park, hitting six home runs in the game — five of them coming in the five-run seventh inning.

Drew Fowler and Jeff Marschand led the Kings with a home run and two singles. Rory Mannering added a home run and a triple. Colton Zeck contributed with a home run and a double. Brody Edgerly and Evan Depew each had a home run, and Keith Lee added a double.

Andrew Troutman got the win.

GIRLS TRACK

Frankfort Relays

Taylor placed second with 60 points, four points behind the host Hot Dogs who won with 64. Cass was third (56) and Eastern was fourth (41).

Hannah Hawkins led Taylor as a triple winner. Hawkins along with Avery Gotshall and Misty Tranberger combined to set a meet record in the long jump at 44 feet, 1.75 inches.

Hawkins and Gotshall joined Liz Mamaril and Kaitlynne Smith to win the shuttle hurdles at 1 minute, 5 seconds, and Hawkins teamed with Mary Troyer and Skylar Denham to take the pole vault (22-2).

Mamaril, Tranberger and Halle Fletcher teamed for a victory in high jump (13-8).

“It was great to get the record,” Taylor coach Alan Tumner said. “We had one jump over 15 feet and also jumps at 14-9 and 14-5. We are a young team, and it’s good that we were able to place second. We are improving all the time.”

BOYS TRACK

Frankfort Relays

Eastern placed second in the relays with 62 points. Frankfort won its own relays with a score of 78. Cass was third (55), followed by Taylor (25).

Kyle Land and Evan Pyke were double winners for Eastern. Land and Pyke joined Blake Donson to win the discus (314-10.5), and J.R. Johnson teamed with Land and Pyke to come out on top in shot put (116-5).

The team of Dakota Swisher, Kevin Jackson and Caleb Gibson broke the meet record in the pole vault at 35-6.

Eastern coach Paul Nicholson was pleased with his team’s performance.

“Frankfort was really strong, and they matured a lot from last year,” Nicholson said. “We had a lot of seconds and thirds, and that played in to the fact of being runner-up.”
