Northwestern swimmers win 11 of 12 events

Northwestern stayed unbeaten at 3-0 by defeating Elwood 148-30 in girls swimming at Northwestern Monday.

The Tigers dominated the meet, winning 11 of the 12 events. They swept the top three spots in seven of those 11 wins.

Northwestern dominated the 200-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, diving, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 breast stroke.

“This is a difficult meet,” Northwestern coach Cindy Britten said. “Elwood doesn’t have the numbers, so I played with the lineup a little bit.

“Our No. 1 kids only swam in two events. I tried to get the younger kids in there to get points. I don’t like to run up the score, or blow a team out. But it’s hard when you have 30 kids. I was really proud of the kids and I was surprised by some of them too.”

Hannah Gray, Ally Goodnight, Shelby Roberts, Emily Thompson and Anna Sloss were double winners.

In the individual events, Gray won in the 100 breast stroke (1:27.52), Goodnight was tops in the 100 freestyle (1:03.31) and Roberts claimed the 100 butterfly (1:07.80). Thompson won the 500 freestyle (5:51.48), Jennifer Claudio was first in the 200 freestyle (2:24.97) and Katie Wilkinson took top honors in the 200 individual medley (2:41.62). Kate Pemberton won the diving (156.15), and Claire Schoenian led the way in the 100 backstroke (1:17.7).

In the relays, Gray, Kasey Reed, Mandy DeVary and Sloss won the 200 medley relay (2:20.40). Sloss, Stefanie Hott, Nikki Hendricks and Hannah Ault were tops in the 200 freestyle relay (2:04.45), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Roberts, Goodnight, Thompson and Rachel Schoenian slapped the wall first (4:18.15).

Carroll 131, Attica 42

The Carroll Cougars (1-1) won their first meet of the season. Kaitlyn Brewster, Emily Schneckloth, Emma Cottrell were quadruple winners and Valarie Allbaugh was a triple winner.

Wrestling

Northfield 46, Western 35

Western started its wrestling season on a down note, but that didn’t discourage Western coach Chad Shepherd.

“We didn’t have our full lineup,” Shepherd said. “We gave up two forfeits with one being hurt, and we didn’t have the football kids wrestling yet. We are a young team, and we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

The Panthers did have four wrestlers win by pins. They were Austin Shepherd (119 weight class), Chris Love (130), Drew Boruff (160) and Jeff Michael (285). Kyle Byrd won at 145 by a technical fall.
