Correction: This article in its original form had in the subheadline the wrong day for the Indiana Sprint Week's visit to Kokomo. The day has been corrected in this story. We regret the error.
The most anticipated week of the season, at least to this point, begins Friday night at the Gas City I-69 Speedway when the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series kicks off the 2014 Indiana Sprint Week.
Unlike many of the past seasons, there is no clear-cut favorite heading into the highly anticipated week that will see the series trek back and forth across the state, concluding next Saturday, July 19 at the Tri-States Speedway in Haubstadt.
Sandwiched in between will be visits to Kokomo on Saturday and the Lawrenceburg Speedway on Sunday. After the teams take a couple of days off at the beginning of next week, the grind picks back up on Wednesday at the Terre Haute Action Track before venturing to the Lincoln Park Speedway on Thursday and Bloomington on Friday.
The most recent winner in the series is Jerry Coons Jr. who picked up the Fourth of July win at Lincoln Park aboard the Edison Motorsports/Crume-Evans Insurance No. 10E. C.J. Leary took second and Shane Cottle third with Bryan Clauson and Dave Darland rounding out the top five.
Brady Bacon will begin ISW 29 points ahead of three-time Sprint Week champion Darland (998-969) in the season-long points battle. Jon Stanbrough is third in the standings with 907 points while two-time and defending series champion Clauson is fourth with 902. Chase Stockon rounds out the top five with 889 markers.
The seven races in nine nights could well go a long way to determining the season championship. A couple bad nights by any of the title contenders, coupled with a string of strong runs by another could easily be the deciding points at season’s end.
