Eastern boys win relays title

Kokomo — Eastern’s boys track and field team ran away from the competition in the six-team Eastern Relays on Saturday with a meet-winning score of 149. Oak Hill was second with 119. Pioneer was third (64), Bluffton was fourth (52), Southern Wells was fifth (37) and Blackford was sixth (35).

Meet MVP Grant Cole won the 110 high hurdles in 15.2 seconds and ruled the long jump with an effort of 23-1 1/2. Lewis Duke won the 1,600 in 4:34, and Riley Haupert won the 100 in :10.99. Where the Comets really shined however was in relay events, taking four wins on the boys side and claiming the co-ed race.

Eastern’s team of Adam Schaaf, K.J. Myers, Duke and Joshua Sommers won the distance medley relay in 11:25. Duke, Sam Higdon, Schaaf and Sommers won the 4x800 relay in 8:44.38. Andrew Turner, Will Porter, Papee Byers and Haupert won the 4x100 relay in :45.38. Damon Byers, Josh Mentis, Sommers and Myers won the 4x400 relay in 3:36.6.

In the co-ed 4x200 relay, Eastern’s Elena White, Anastasia Komarova, Trey Thomas and Turner took first in 1:49.

“Our relays have been strong all year and we got a lot of rest this week. We had two days off because of the weather, and I actually canceled one of our practices because of injuries,” Eastern coach Austin Roark said. “The wins were huge, and we got a lot of seconds on down that really helped us as well. We placed I think in every single event which really helps. And some younger guys stepped up. We got two places in the pole vault with two guys who are new to the event [Tanner Reed and Andrew Doak] so that was huge for us.”

Girls meet

Oak Hill won the girls side of the six-team Eastern Relays with a score of 155. Eastern took second with a score of 140, Southern Wells was third (70), Pioneer was fourth (43), Blackford was fifth (22) and Bluffton was sixth (13).

Eastern had several winning performances. Kayla Visser won the pole vault with an effort of 7-6. Sarah Wagner won the 1,600 in 5:39. Bethany Neeley won the 100 hurdles in 15.4. And Brittany Neeley, Bethany Neeley, Jessie Sprinkles and Avery Ewing won the 1,600 relay in 4:07. Bethany Neeley was the meet’s high point award winner with the two wins and seconds in the 1,600 and shuttle hurdle relay.

“Just really good effort overall,” Eastern girls coach Michael Goodspeed said. “Our 4 by 4 [relay] is I think maybe top seven in the state with that time. Bethany in the hurdles is No. 8 in the state with that time, so a couple of good performances there.
