A man being sought in the burglary of a Kokomo police officer’s garage has been arrested in Georgia.

Joshua J. Smith, 30, formerly of the 1000 block of East Richmond Street, Kokomo, is being held in the DeKalb County Jail in Decatur, Ga.

Smith is wanted on a Howard Superior Court 4 bench warrant charging him with class C felony aiding, inducing, or causing burglary and class D felony possession of stolen property.

In September, KPD Detective Richard Benzinger’s garage was burglarized. A power washer and several hand tools were stolen. Smith was questioned during the investigation by KPD Detective Heath Haalck.

A warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest in January, but Howard County sheriff deputies were unable to locate him at his former address, said Sheriff Marty Talbert.

“Smith was stopped in Georgia for a traffic infraction and arrested for operating on a suspended license. Georgia authorities received computer information notifying them the Howard County Sheriff Department held an active felony warrant for him,” said Talbert.

Smith was arraigned Thursday in DeKalb County Magistrate Court. He voluntarily waived extradition back to Indiana. He is being held as a fugitive from justice. Local authorities have until March 15 to assume custody, Talbert said.

Smith will be held on $30,000 bail upon his return to the Howard County jail.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of any wanted person is asked to contact the Howard County Sheriff Department at (765) 457-1105, or Central Indiana Crime Stoppers at (800) 922-5378.
