TIPTON – An early-morning crash involving a school bus sent several children to the hospital, although all escaped major injuries.

According to the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department, a Tipton Community School Corp. bus driven by Brian D. Overdorf, 56, Tipton, stopped on Indiana 28 near the intersection of 300 West to pick up two children at about 7:30 a.m. when the bus was rear-ended at a high rate of speed.

For reasons unknown, Delmas L. Stapleton, 82, Tipton, failed to brake before his 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck crashed into the back of the bus.

Stapleton was temporarily entrapped in the pickup due to the driver’s side door being jammed, but crews were able to get him out promptly.

Deputies indicated Stapleton did not remember the crash. He was transported to IU Tipton Hospital for treatment for lacerations to his face and hand and is in stable condition.

The school bus was carrying six children. Five of the children were transported to the hospital and checked out for complaints of head and neck pain. All were treated and released.

Overdorf was able to take himself to the hospital for treatment. He complained of stiffness and soreness, but was released.
