It’s your lucky day — for the first time, a St. Patrick’s Day 5K run is coming to Kokomo. And it features beer.
Howard County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is hosting the inaugural St. Patrick’s Day Beer 5K on Saturday, March 16. The race will start and end at Tin Man Brewing on Buckeye Street and runners ages 21 and older receive a free 12-ounce beer after they complete the 3.1 miles.
“There hasn’t been a St. Patty’s Day run in town and we knew a lot of people were going to Indy to do one,” said Christa Myers, CASA’s capacity building coordinator. “We thought it would be fun to bring something local here to have that aspect of it.”
Howard County CASA currently has 145 children assigned to the program, with 53 of those children on the waitlist. To serve those 53 children on the waitlist, CASA needs 33 volunteers and $100 to train each volunteer, Myers said.
The CASA training is a four-to-six week class for a total of 32 hours of training. After the volunteers complete the training, they will work on a case six to eight hours each month, and attend court once every three months.
The St. Patrick’s Day Beer 5K is just one of CASA’s fundraising events to help cover the services they provide to children. With it being the event’s first year, Myers said they were excited to have more than 170 people registered to participate as of Thursday.
“It’s kind of blown us away, which is fantastic,” she said. “We’re hoping to build on that every year.”
Day of registration starts at noon on Saturday and the race will begin at 1:30 p.m. Registration is $30, which includes a T-shirt while supplies last and a free 12-ounce Tin Man beer. Participants are encouraged to dress in St. Patrick’s Day costumes and green attire.
