Despite a scheduled closing date of Jan. 13, skaters will be able to get some more time on the ice at The Frozen Sandlot at Kokomo Municipal Stadium this weekend.

The tremendous success of the inaugural season has led the City of Kokomo and Bridges Outreach to extend the season for one more weekend and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, a press release stated.

The ice skating rink will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, Sunday, Jan. 20 and Monday, Jan. 21. The price remains the same — $5 with a coupon (available at area businesses or online at thefrozensandlot.com).
Travis Taflinger of Bridges Outreach said the success of first season led to the decision to extend it one more weekend.

“The customer satisfaction was so high and everyone has really enjoyed it,” Taflinger said, in the release. “We’ve been asked about extending past the closing date and based on the turnout, we have decided to do it.”

Support from the community has been the key to success, said Mayor Greg Goodnight in the release.

“Our goal was to provide a new and unique amenity from the community,” Goodnight said. “It has been exciting to see how many people have taken to the ice and are enjoying ice skating again or for the first time. The community has fully-embraced The Frozen Sandlot.”
