According to the scanner, an accident at the intersection of Smith Road and U.S. 31 left a car wedged underneath a semi. The call came over the scanner at around 9:20 p.m. Thursday. U.S. 31 southbound was closed just north of the intersection shortly thereafter.
A Samaritan medical helicopter was immediately put on standby by responding agencies. Flares were deployed in effort to clear a landing space in the southbound lane. The helicopter touched down just after 10 p.m. The female driver of the tan-colored four-door sedan was responsive as she was extracted from the scene. She was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital. She appeared to be the only passenger in the car.
