A Kokomo man who plead guilty to a Level 3 felony charge of rape was sentenced to 12 years in the Indiana Department of Correction during a hearing last month in Howard Superior Court 4.
Blayse Wood, 20, will serve nine of those 12 years in jail, and the balance will be suspended with supervised probation.
Wood will also have to complete a drug and alcohol program sometime during his sentence, as well as register as a sex offender.
The sentencing stems from an October 2018 incident in which a 17-year-old female told police that Wood sexually assaulted her in the backseat of his vehicle during a date, court records stated at the time.
During an interview with police, the 17-year-old stated that she met Wood on a dating app, and the two had a relationship online.
The girl also said that the two ended up going on a date at the AMC Classic Kokomo 12 movie theater in town, where Wood raped her in the backseat of his vehicle while it was parked in the theater parking lot, the probable cause affidavit noted.
Text messages obtained by police between Wood and the 17-year-old after the incident also appeared to show Wood admitting to the incident and apologizing for what happened, court records indicated.
Per terms of a mutually agreed upon plea agreement, other felony charges of criminal confinement and sexual misconduct with a minor were dismissed during the sentencing hearing.
