A Kokomo man, who police say stole an idling car from a convenience store Tuesday morning, was arrested shortly after leading city and county police on a brief chase through city streets.

Officers chasing the stolen 2000 Chevrolet Impala managed to stop the driver, Charles Howard, 39, by boxing in the car between two patrol cars, said Capt. Brian Thompson of the Kokomo Police Department.

A KPD car and Howard County Sheriff Department car sustained damage in the maneuver.

According to Thompson, police were called about 9 a.m. to a report of the car being stolen from Grocery Sack, 105 E. Defenbaugh St.

Minutes later, Officer Roger Phillips saw a vehicle at U.S 31 and Hoffer Street that matched the description, and the chase began, Thompson said.

City and county officers pursued the car through the city’s east side before stopping it at Southway Boulevard and U.S. 31.

Howard was arrested after briefly struggling with officers as they tried to get him out of the car. He was charged with felony auto theft, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and criminal recklessness.
