The Howard County Board of Commissioners - Paul Wyman, Tyler Moore and Brad Bray - put out the following statement regarding the shooting of Howard County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Buckley and Deputy Carl Koontz early Sunday morning:

"We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic situation regarding two of our sheriff's deputies last night. We are heartbroken at the loss of Deputy Koontz. He was a selfless individual and an outstanding deputy. He leaves behind a beautiful family that he cared for deeply, and his loss will leave a void difficult to fill.

"We are hopeful for the continued recovery of Deputy Buckley. His commitment to his profession is evident in the exemplary way he carries out his duties. The Buckley and Koontz families remain in our prayers.

"Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line day in and day out to make our community a better place. These deputies' heroic actions speak to the danger but yet the sacrificial work they all do on a daily basis.

"We also want to thank Sheriff Rogers, the entire sheriff's department, dispatch, the Russiaville Police Department and ambulance service, Emergency Management Agency, Kokomo Police Department, emergency medical personnel and the Indiana State Police for their effective and professional assistance throughout the night.

"We ask that our community keep these families and all of our law enforcement family in your prayers in the coming days."

U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly put out the following statement:

“My heart goes out to these officers and their families, particularly the family of Deputy Carl Koontz, who was tragically lost earlier today. I am keeping them in my prayers. Every day, law enforcement officers across our state and our country get up, go to work and put their lives on the line to keep us safe. This tragedy is a reminder of that dedication and of our obligation to honor their service.”
