A Kokomo man was killed as a result of a vehicle accident on U.S. 31 Friday afternoon.
William Dickison, 75, was traveling in his 2008 gray Chevy Silverado eastbound on County Road 600 N. at around 1:46 p.m. when he entered the southbound lane of U.S. 31 and was struck by a semi-truck driven by Vehbo Poturak, of Sterling, Michigan, according to a press release from the Howard County Sheriff's Department.
Police say a preliminary investigation has found that Poturak tried to stop and avoid hitting the Silverado but was unsuccessful. The impact caused the semi to enter the northbound lanes and then be struck by another semi driven by Scott Herrell, 46, of Rochester.
Dickison was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where he later died due to his injuries. Poturak and Herrell were not injured, according to the release.
Witnesses to the crash told police they saw Dickison stop at the intersection of 600 N. and U.S. 31 and then proceed eastbound into the path of the semi. This area of U.S. 31 is under construction.
The crash is still under investigation.
