Officials have turned down the Indianapolis Tea Party’s request for a waiver of $450 in fees for bagging parking meters during an event at the Statehouse.

The city closed 30 parking meters nearby at the Tea Party’s request when the group held its Tax Day Rally on April 15.

The Indianapolis Star reports the city typically waives fees for closing meters during nonprofit groups’ events, but the Board of Public Works denied the group’s request Wednesday due to the group’s political status.

Board member Dennis Rosebrough says granting the waiver might set a precedent allowing other political parties to avoid paying fees to close meters for their events.
