LAFAYETTE — Human remains have been found in a storage facility following a fire in Lafayette, authorities say.

Fire investigators discovered the remains in a storage unit that was among several that burned Thursday morning at Simply Self Storage, Lafayette police Lt. Matt Gard told the Journal and Courier.

A forensic anthropologist is assisting the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office in its investigation.

“We are treating it as a homicide until proven otherwise,” Chief Deputy Coroner Carrie Costello said. “There just isn’t much right now. I’m hoping the autopsy will give us some additional information.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday afternoon. A positive identification was pending.

Firefighters were called to the storage center around 2 a.m. Thursday for the fire in a row of units.
