Police say a man who draped himself in an American flag after driving an SUV up the steps of the Indiana War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis has been taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Police and firefighters swarmed to the memorial about 4 p.m. Tuesday after the man poured gasoline down the memorial’s limestone steps and set it on fire.
The 49-year-old Indianapolis man was shirtless and holding a blue pole and a handgun.
A State Capitol Police officer was able to talk the man into dropping the gun and he was taken into custody after about 45 minutes.
Police say damage to the memorial was minimal.
