Northwestern’s 42-32 win over Tri-Central Saturday night knocked the Lady Trojans from first place in Class A of the Associated Press’ Top 10 basketball poll.

The three-time defending state champion TC girls, now 3-1 before hosting Madison-Grant on Wednesday, slipped to the No. 3 position behind South Central and Fort Wayne Canterbury.

In that game Saturday at Northwestern, the Lady Tigers put together a solid second half after leading just 18-17 at intermission. Natalie Appelhans and Audrey Gaither led the Tigers with 12 and 11 points each, while Lindsey Sewell added 8.

The victory earned Northwestern votes in Class 2A, where Taylor sits in the No. 10 position. Kokomo’s girls remained unbeaten at 4-0, beating defending North Central Conference champ Anderson 61-50. Despite the win, the Kats dropped one spot to No. 7 in the Class 4A poll.

In some of this week’s major girls games, unbeaten Western travels to 4A McCutcheon while Taylor entertains Tipton on Wednesday night. Northwestern takes on Clinton Central Thursday before hosting MIC foe Hamilton Heights on Saturday. Also Saturday, Taylor and Western look to have a shoot-out on the Panthers’ court and Kokomo entertains always-tough Huntington North.

There was little movement among area teams in this week’s boys polls.

Western maintained its nine points in Class 3A, despite beating Kokomo last Wednesday night. In 2A, Northwestern stayed at No. 11 and Cass, still waiting to play its first game, moved up a spot to No. 12. In Class A, Tri-Central dipped four spots to No. 7 after its loss Saturday to Northwestern and Carroll stayed among those teams receiving votes.

The boys headliner this weekend is Friday’s Northwestern-Western game in Russiaville. Also Friday, Kokomo opens conference play at Huntington North, Eastern hosts Oak Hill and Taylor entertains Tri-Central.

A reminder on the boys schedule this week is that Tri-Central’s game with Sheridan, scheduled for Saturday, has been pushed back to Jan. 25 because of Sheridan’s late football finish. Cass’ game with Hamilton Heights, originally set for Friday, was postponed to Dec. 22, also because of the football playoffs.
