Retired teacher Brian Vukadinovich of Wheatfield sends this Cheer for the determination of Parkland, Florida students seeking stricter gun laws:
“I am a retired teacher and I am very impressed with how the Parkland students who were so viciously victimized at the hands of a semiautomatic weapon have so eloquently spoken out and expressed themselves and so effectively organized a powerful movement, calling on public officials to enact some sensible gun control.
“I am a gun owner and strong believer in the Second Amendment, but I don’t need a machine gun to protect myself. When the time comes that semiautomatic rifles are the weapon of the day to massacre innocent school kids, and that time has unfortunately sadly arrived, then the time has come for the adults, particularly politicians, to responsibly step up to the plate and choose the safety of our kids over money and politics, and make no mistake about it, it has been all about money and politics, no question about it.
“We need to listen to these brave kids from Parkland, who were subjected to such a horrific thing in watching their friends get killed while they feared for their own lives in their school. I have been very impressed with how the students have carried themselves in their movement. Emma Gonzalez has been a great spokesperson for the students in discussing this issue. There have been several other wonderful students from Parkland who have eloquently and passionately spoken on this issue.
“When a reporter asked a young lady why she thought the students would be able to affect positive change in the gun laws when adults haven’t been able to do so, the young lady responded, ‘adults are influenced by money, but kids are influenced by feelings.’ I couldn’t believe such a young person could come up with such a great answer.
“We adults should take heed to what this amazing young lady said. These students experienced something horrific in their young lives that only they know what it is like. We need to listen to these wonderful students. We can learn something from them.”
