Charles Veach of Burlington sends this Jeer for the rapidly disappearing pension benefit among manufacturers:
“Blue-collar workers are the foundation on which our nation continues to grow. Without this hardworking class of Americans, the already dwindling workforce of trade jobs would reach a deficit our nation can’t afford to see. The jobs blue-collar workers like myself perform are vital to the infrastructure of our nation.
“Throughout my life, I have been employed in the steel industry, providing materials and services that are needed in our state and the nation. During my time in this line of work, I was promised pensions to assist me once I retire. Now, there is a chance that the pensions promised to me will be taken away due to a shortage of companies to provide the funds. As more and more companies close their doors due to blows from the economy and outsourcing, the faster our pensions disappear.
“As a dedicated worker, it is only fair that the industries stay committed to providing pensions to those of the hardworking blue-collar class. There is a lack of attention being paid to this important issue. Awareness needs to be raised so we are able to get the pensions that were promised to us. They are a vital component to our retirement and being able to support ourselves and our families.”
