Mike Moran of Kokomo sends this Jeer for hate crimes legislation in Indiana:
“Much is being said about the need to enact hate crime legislation. Indiana is an outcast, on the list of states without a hate crimes law. How have we existed? Oh, the shame.
“Am I in favor of hate crimes? Of course not. We should respect people and obey laws already on the books. I agree with the Gary Varvel cartoon of Feb. 20.
“Hate crimes, it seems, are only crimes if the government is cajoled by special interest groups. Only can it be a hate crime if the approved list is attacked. Shouldn’t all crimes be hate crimes? And shouldn’t hoaxes be the ultimate hate crime?
“Too often hate crimes pit one group against another. LGBTQXYZ have to be ‘protected’ and that turns then into Christians are committing hate crimes because they believe in a biblical definition of marriage.
“Christians are the haters because they won’t let the LGBTQXYZ crowd live their lives.
“Oh, our politicians will say that won’t happen with this bill, but you just watch and see how long before a pastor is arrested because he quotes the Bible and that threatens some LBGTQXYZ person.
“And before anyone says this is only about tolerance, I don’t believe that line either. Tolerance in today’s PC world is a one way street, and it seems I am going against the PC traffic.”
