The Kokomo Jackrabbits and Traverse City Pit Spitters split a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Traverse City rallied from a five-run deficit to win the afternoon game 7-6, and the Jackrabbits rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the evening closer 5-3.
In the evening game, Denzel Clark had an RBI single for Kokomo in the third for the game’s first run. Traverse City scored its three runs over the fifth and sixth.
Jeff Timko got Kokomo’s eighth-inning rally moving with a leadoff walk. Jack Kraus followed with a single and Austin Elder got the scoreboard moving with an RBI double. After a pitching change, Chase Keng and Evan Albrecht hit back-to-back RBI singles for a 4-3 lead and the Jackrabbits got an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Logan Jarvis.
Kokomo reliever Ryan Boyer gave up a leadoff double in the top of the ninth, then got a strikeout, fly out, and another strikeout to end the game and pick up the save. Joey Haass threw the last two innings of the eighth and got the win. Aaron Husson started and threw six innings with three runs (all earned), four hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Chase Nix then relieved and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The Jackrabbit staff allowed just seven hits and one walk.
Dylan Dohanos went 3 for 5 in the second game and was 5 for 8 on the day. Jack Kraus and Keng were each 2 for 4 in Kokomo’s victory.
Traverse City won the first game by scoring six times in the final two innings. Kokomo starter Owen Callaghan departed with a 6-1 lead after a strong seven innings. The IU Kokomo pitcher gave up just one earned run on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
That lead unravelled quickly as first reliever Christian Lewis gave up a leadoff walk, then was replaced by Kokomo High School product Bayden Root. Root walked two batters before Traverse City’s Jake Wilson hit a bases-clearing triple and another run scored on a ground out to trim the Jackrabbits’ lead to 6-5 after the road half of the seventh.
Ryan took the mound for Kokomo in the ninth. The Pit Spitters put two runners on via a hit by pitch and a single before Andrew Morrow’s two-out, two-run double plated the tying and winning runs. Boyer took the loss.
Kokomo had previously scored three runs in the bottom of the third and three in the seventh. Timko ripped a two-run triple and Kraus scored Timko on a ground out for a 3-1 Jackrabbits lead through three innings.
The Jackrabbits got two run-scoring hits with two outs in the seventh. Elder drove in a run with a single and Ethan Gallagher followed with another single to plate two runs.
Elder led Kokomo at the plate in the first game, going 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI. Albrecht and Dohanos each went 2 for 3 with Albrecht scoring twice and Dohanos once.
