Western’s wrestling team improved to 2-0 in dual matches Wednesday, topping Tri-Central 65-18 in Sharpsville. Western won five of the eight weights contested. For the Panthers, D.J. Shepherd (130 pounds), Nick Lenahan (135), Travis Marley (171) and Marq Reser (215) all scored pins while Chris Hunt (189) won his match 15-0. Western also won six weight classes by forfeit.

“As a group, we need to be much more aggressive. We had some young wrestlers come out and do some really good things,” Western coach Chad Shepherd said. He noted in particular Marley, Hunt and Reser saying those three “all wrestled really well.”

Western’s next action is Saturday in the Kokomo Super Six.

For Tri-Central, Spencer Burton (119), Joe Januszkiewicz (152) and Andrew Martin (285) each won by pin.

Amber Suiters scored 24 points to lead the Trojans to a victory at Madison-Grant. Haley Hewitt and Sarah Adams each added eight.

Tri-Central (3-2) clamped down defensively in the second half to give the Trojans a cushion after a tight first half. TC led 30-28 at halftime but pushed the lead to ten at 46-36 through three quarters.

“I thought the second half we came out and played a little smarter on defense and our positioning was a little better and we were able to contain them a little better off the drive than what we did in the first half,” TC coach Kathie Layden said.
